  • Learning How to Learn Again – 4 Timeless Strategies of Learning that are Still Applicable in the AI Era

Learning How to Learn Again – 4 Timeless Strategies of Learning that are Still Applicable in the AI Era

AI is here.  We are in the age of terminators vs men.  As more tasks are now handled by AI, how can we stay relevant?  Your ability to connect, innovate, and problem-solve is critical because these are tasks that AI cannot do, at least not currently.  More importantly, you must be adaptive and respond quickly to external demand as AI is still evolving.  Learning faster and better is the new edge you have over others.

Here are 4 proven learning strategies that still work today.  (They are not your usual “have enough sleep and exercise” type of advice.)

    1)      Plan your learning … How much, how long, and how often

    • Bite-sized it! How do you eat a large elephant?  One bite at a time!  Likewise, how to learn a large chunk of knowledge?  Break it down into small, digestible pieces so that you do not feel overwhelmed.  Learn at your own pace.
    • Revisit, recap, and review your learning material regularly.  Your brain needs reminders before it remembers.  Psychologists call this “spaced repetition”.
    • Time your learning – do a bit of learning or ponder over what you do not understand just before you sleep.  Your subconscious will continue to work to internalise it after that.  Synapses, connections, and memory consolidation form when you sleep.

    2)      Engage your senses to create context-dependent memory

    • Create a stable learning environment for yourself to learn … same seat, same background music, same coffee.  You will get into a learning state faster and learn more efficiently.
    • learn actively through multisensory.  Use all your senses, or as many senses as possible, during learning…. move, doodle, gamify (with yourself or others), reflect, ask questions, … so that it becomes part of you.
    • social learning … surround yourself with motivated, passionate people who love the same subject.  Allow yourself to be fully immersed in the subject, where you eat and talk about it every moment.  Learning by osmosis happens when you gradually pick it up from others.
    • relate your new skills or knowledge to something you already know.  If you just learned a new programming language, ask yourself how this language is different from the ones you previously knew.  If you learned a new customer service technique, ask yourself how this technique is different from the older techniques you learnt.

    3)      Summarise in diagrams to visualize the process and flow

    • Look for the most critical and essential ideas to achieve mastery, which are the 20% that you should acquire to get 80% of the results.  What is the one big idea or 3 key points from the learning?
    • Create a visual model to summarise the key concepts for yourself and for easy reference.
    • Teach and explain it in simple words to another person, or even better, a child.  Anyone can make a subject complicated.  It takes a genius to put it simply.  Identify where you struggle with the explanation and improve it.  This is better known as the “Feynman Technique”, named after Richard Feynman, the physicist who shared the Nobel prize in 1965.

    4)      Pressure test yourself to up your ability

    • Challenge your brain, and your brain will “grow” just like your muscles.  You learnt more after being challenged.  This is also called “desirable difficulty”.
    • Give yourself a test.  Start with a smart recall (ask yourself how you can) and apply what you know in a real situation.  Push yourself to explore different elements of the content by changing and questioning it.

Lastly, a word of caution.  Learning is great.  However, the danger of over-learning is inaction.  Learning creates the illusion of “busyness” and makes you feel occupied and productive.  To some extent, it is a great excuse for non-action.

We all know that the key to success is action.  You cannot achieve anything from just studying it, though studying is the first important step.

  • New Year’s resolutions – why they never work

New Year’s resolutions – why they never work

6 days into the new year, have you set your New Year’s resolution? Or you have decided not to do it this year, because it never works.

Most resolutions written in December will be down the drain by February of the following year. People who wrote them have either given up or given in to their own old ways of doing things.

You know this: motivation never works. Your one good idea does not work. Willpower cannot make it happen. What works is daily, consistent, and purposeful habits that bring you closer to your goals. Baby steps each day compound and bring you the results.

What is even better? Having good habits reduces the need to think and analyze. You no longer need to decide what to do. You have built it into your daily routine. You save time in planning.

Here are 3 keys to creating powerful habits for permanent behavioral change.

    1) reward yourself – make it satisfying to complete what you wish to do. Give yourself something. No doubt your body is already creating Dopamine upon completing the task. You can make it better. Be it a simple coffee treat, a small gift, or just a deserved break to watch a video. For it to work, choose rewards that are immediate and attractive.

    2) Make execution easy for yourself, especially the first baby step at the start. You don’t need to run 10 kilometres weekly, just start with 1. You don’t have to write the entire email; just write the subject and save the draft.

Easy also means removing any obstacles that prevent you from doing what you plan to do. Ensure that what you need for the task is easily accessible. If you want to exercise more, keep your gear and equipment in a convenient location and sign up with a gym near your home or office.

    3) Create highly visible reminders for yourself. Out of sight means out of mind. Place your running shoes in a conspicuous place if you want to make running a habit. Use sticky notes to remind yourself and put them in places where you cannot miss them. Even better, get a buddy who shares the same goal with you to remind each other.

This year, instead of focusing on getting what you wish for, develop good micro-habits. Trust the process, and soon you will be achieving your dreams.

  • It’s Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace

It’s Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace

Mark your calendars—World Mental Health Day is on October 10th, 2024! As a business leader or HR professional, you’re likely feeling the squeeze of tight budgets and ever-growing KPIs. But here’s the good news: promoting mental well-being doesn’t have to break the bank, and it can actually boost those KPIs. Intrigued? Read on!

Here are 7 creative ways to boost your employees’ mental health—without needing a corporate spa retreat:

    1. Find Your Mental Health Champions
Recruit volunteers to serve as mental health ambassadors. They’ll be your in-house advocates, creating a supportive environment—kind of like the office superheroes, minus the capes.

    2. Spread Positive Vibes (Literally)
Post uplifting messages and mental health tips around the office—think pantries, restrooms, hallways…anywhere employees are likely to see them. Google has a treasure trove of these; feel free to borrow!

    3. Make Mental Health Fun with a Quiz
Yes, you read that right—competitions can be good for mental health too. Host a mental health quiz with simple prizes. It’s a little counterintuitive, but hey, who doesn’t love a challenge?

    4. Schedule ‘Protected Time’ for a Mental Break
Dedicate an hour each week where employees can do anything from closing their eyes to taking a walk or stretching. Think of it as “productive downtime”—because a well-rested brain works wonders.

    5. Educate, Educate, Educate
Mental health awareness is key. Bring in trainers if you can, or encourage self-learning through AI tools and Google searches. Knowledge is power, after all.

    6. Create a Peer Support Network
Set up a peer support group where employees facing similar challenges can share experiences and resources. Sometimes, knowing you’re not alone makes all the difference.

    7. Foster Team Bonding
Organize activities that help employees connect. Go beyond coffee and snacks—try nature walks, art jamming, or even volunteering together. Teamwork makes the dream work, after all.

So, which of these ideas will you run with this October? We’d love to hear from you!

  • Listening – a Reminder to all Managers

Listening – a Reminder to all Managers

A message that we shared in our monthly leadership development workshop with the BPM participants. A great reminder to all of us, especially when we meet our love ones during this festive season.

In  his  book,  “Teach  Us  to  Number  Our  Days”,  author  David  Roper  writes:

    • When I’m thinking about an answer while others are talking, I’m not  listening.  ƒ
    • When I give unsolicited advice, I’m not listening. Unsolicited advice always  sounds like criticism.  ƒ
    • When I suggest they shouldn’t feel that way, I’m not listening.  ƒ
    • When I apply a quick‐fix to their problem, I’m not listening.  ƒ
    • When I fail to acknowledge their feelings, I’m not listening.   ƒ
    • When I fidget, glance at my watch and appear to be rushed, I’m not listening.  ƒ
    • When I fail to make eye contact, I’m not listening.  ƒ
    • When I don’t ask follow up questions, I’m not listening.  ƒ
    • When I top their story with a bigger story, I’m not listening.  ƒ
    • And when they share a difficult experience and I counter with one of my  own, I’m not listening.”    ƒ

  • Employee Engagement

Employee engagement is a term that has been overused in Singapore. Non performing employees are often described as “disengaged”. Managers were told to engage their staffs to reduce turnover. Management gurus refer to it as an approach to motivate employees to contribute to the success of the organization and to ensure that employees are committed to achieving organizational goals.

So what exactly is Employees’ Engagement? It can also be defined as the emotional commitment the employee has to the organization and its goals. Engaged employees are high in energy and resilience, dedicated and focus.

The most important reason for employee engagement is its direct positive impact on performance, productivity and teamwork. Disengaged employees are easily distracted, uncommitted and/or unmotivated to improve.

Companies engage their employees in many ways. They can

    1. Demonstrate appreciation for contributions through recognitions.
    2. Communicate frequently and regularly through various channels while consciously remove barriers to communication,
    3. Encourage social interaction outside work to foster stronger ties within the team.
    4. Support the development of employees’ career
    5. Take the extra effort to understand employees’ thinking and needs

Employee engagement motivates staffs to give their best to the organization as they have been “equipped adequately” to perform tasks. It forms a vital part of talent retention strategy.
